A love letter to my ‘soon-to-be’ middle child
Dearest Little Two, the words that come to mind as I start this letter are, “You are my sunshine…” You make us so happy and smile each and every day.
You are filled with joy for life and a beautiful humor that keeps us laughing. One of my favorite quotes from you is, “Mommy, you wanna hear a funny joke?” And you proceed to tell us the three jokes you know. Are you sure you’re only two? More like two going on seven.
Being the only girl, you hold a very special place in our hearts. Your brother is of course very special to us in a different way, but our love for you is unique. You wiggled and wormed your way into our hearts from day one and our hearts grew and expanded to love you unconditionally. Much like your brother, I never knew I could love so much. I never knew my heart could fill with such all-consuming love for you.

Ms. Little Two, you are uniquely independent and assertive, but at the same time so, so dependent. You love to cuddle. It’s one of your favorite past times! I love when you cuddle with me. You are one of the best ‘cuddlers’. Please don’t ever lose that! Oh, and you give the best “squeezes.”
You follow your older brother everywhere and do your best to keep up, but you also choose to do things your own way. You aren’t afraid to have your own opinion, and I love that about you.
You are the baby of the family. Well, at least for right now. Your baby brother is due in less than two months, and I have a feeling your world is going to be rocked. You have been the baby of the family for almost three full years. Capturing our hearts and taking full of advantage of your cheeky little smile.
Oh, that adorable little smile. The way it shines when you know you are doing something funny. The way you flash it when you say, “I love you.” I hope it will continue to shine even with the changes that are coming.
I hope to see your eyes still filled with laughter even when things might not go your way. You surprise us with your blue eyes still every day. The blues eyes so bright and attentive, showing a glimpse into a mind ready to learn. Ready to lead.
I hope that with the birth of your baby brother, we will see the caring, sweet side of your personality. That you will step up and set the example for your baby brother.
I will need you. Yes, your mommy will need you to be strong and to help. It’s so adorable when you see a baby now and ‘coo’ and ‘ahh’ over the baby. I can’t imagine what you will do with your very own baby brother. You will probably want to help more than you are able, but that will be something mommy is happy to deal with.
I hope you know that even though you will no longer be the baby in the family. You will still be loved irrefutably. You will still hold a special place in our hearts.
I know the first few months will probably be an adjustment, but there will be room in my lap for you always. For as long as you want to cuddle, you are welcome. I know that one day you won’t want that any more. That one day will be the last time you cuddle in my lap, but I hope it’s not for years to come.
So, to my soon-to-be middle child. I want you to know that today and all days, I love you. I love you for who you are and who God has called you to become. I love you for your unique gifts and talents and for your special personality. I love you for your interests and your passions.
Your dad and I can’t wait to see you grow up with your brothers. You will be blessed by a childhood filled with brotherly love. And I know you will return sisterly love to the same.
We love you, Little Two.
