Have you ever had one of those crazy ideas, and you just don’t know where it came from?
That’s exactly how our very first homemade costume started. It was a Halloween DIY Oven that was totally random but also started one of our sweetest family traditions.

Halloween DIY Oven Costume Idea
When my son was in first grade, we were sitting around talking about what he wanted to be for Halloween. And honestly… every year that question stressed me out.
I wasn’t sure how much we wanted to celebrate Halloween. I didn’t want to spend money on costumes they’d only wear once. But at the same time, I knew it was part of the fun—getting dressed up, going out, getting candy. I still wanted to participate… I just didn’t feel all that creative.

So one day we’re brainstorming. And you know how kids get in that silly mood—“I’m going to be an airplane. I’m going to be Superman. I’m going to be this, I’m going to be that.”
And then my son goes, “I want to be an oven.”
We all laughed. But for some reason, that idea stuck with him. This was back in August or September, and he just kept saying it. “No, I want to be an oven.”
Our First Homemade Costume Idea
So my husband and I were like… okay, why not? At least it gave us a direction. And my husband—he’s the creative one—he grabbed a box and just started designing. My son helped. I borrowed a chef’s hat from a friend. And before I knew it, this amazing costume was born.
My favorite part? The little door on the front. You could open the oven, put candy inside, and you couldn’t even see his body because it looked like the back of an oven. All those little details just made it so fun.
And watching my husband and my son collaborate—that was the best. They had such a good time making it together.

I didn’t even realize it then, but that was the start of a family tradition. Isn’t it funny how traditions sneak up on you like that?
Every year since, my husband has helped the kids come up with and build costumes. Last year, my son and daughter even drew theirs out on paper with all the details, and my husband used their sketches as blueprints. Another year my kids were obsessed with Rubix cubes so this costume was born!
Lessons Learned from Homemade Costumes
And I just love that it’s teaching them something bigger—that you can come up with an idea, take action on it, and bring it to life. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. You don’t have to buy the generic thing. You can be creative. You can be yourself.
That’s honestly my favorite part about these DIY costumes. It’s not just about saving money or being different. It’s about the fun of doing it together.
I know one day it’ll change. The kids will outgrow this. But right now, I’m soaking it up—every messy, creative, silly moment.
So yeah… that was the story of our very first homemade costume. An oven. Who would’ve thought?
One Final Note
Honestly, this idea of a homemade costume really sparked back to when my mom used to sew my costumes as a kid. Somehow this tiger costume survived and every one of my siblings wore it, and all of my kids wore it too! I guess this really is a long-time family tradition!
