Before I was a mom I knew a few signs of teething. I knew if your baby was abnormally cranky or really drooly he would probably be popping out a tooth soon. If he was chewing on everything and wanting cold foods, there was likelihood of a tooth. I even knew that ear infections and fevers were likely symptoms of teething as well. But after having Little One and Little Two I found out some surprising symptoms of teething as well as remedies to help.

When Little One was getting his first teeth, I thought he was sick or that he was just warm from over heating. But these symptoms of teething are surprisingly common among kids.

How do you know if your baby is teething?

5 Surprising Baby Teething Symptoms

Runny Nose

This one often preceded the next. If he had no other symptoms but a runny nose, I knew teething was probably coming.

Diaper Rash

Normally caused by the acidity from drool being swallowed or runny nose, my kids’ bottoms would turn a bright red when they were teething.

Red Cheeks

Although these cheeks were pretty cute, they weren’t a sign of overheating but rather teething.

Waking up in the middle of the night

If my kids suddenly started waking up in the middle of the night, I realized it might be something more than just a sleep regression.

Decreased Appetite

Growing teeth hurts! Would you want to chew food?

3. Frozen Breast Milk or Formula

Another option to try is to get one of the mesh feeders that you can freeze with breastmilk or formula. This is a great option for babies who can’t have solid foods yet! Don’t forget the bib!

4. Applesauce

We’ve found that once our kids started eating solids that applesauce seemed to help as well! The cold texture soothed temporarily.

5. Baby Tylenol

When the kids sound like they are super in pain and nothing will calm them down, we give them an appropriate amount of Tylenol for their weight. We try to make this a last resort. You should ask your pediatrician if you aren’t sure on the amount.
