My dearest little ones,

Someone tried to tell me. They tried to tell me that after you have kids, things change.

That everything is different. That you see the world differently because of the love you feel for your kids. That the love I would feel when I held you in my arms would be nothing I had ever felt before.

But I didn’t believe quite them. The love was much, much more than I could have ever imagined!

They tried to convince me that I didn’t know. But how do you know what you don’t know?

You are blind until you experience it. Blind to the intense love and caring and deep heart burning that comes with becoming a mom.

I just didn’t believe them.

They tried to tell me how tired I would be. How physically and emotionally exhausted I would be as a new mom.

But I had been to college. I had pulled all nighters before.

I went to the freaking Air Force Academy. I knew what it was like to be sleep deprived. But I didn’t really know.

Motherhood is exhausting.

What they did tell me though is that you would be my greatest gift of motherhood.

I believed them.

You, my dearest little ones. You are my greatest gifts of motherhood. And I am oh so grateful you are in my life.

I know, sweeties, I know. Sometimes I don’t show appreciation for the small moments like I should.

Sometimes I am so ready to just rest and relax and take a nap. I selfishly tell you to just go by yourself, when you ask for the hundredth time that day to go to the bathroom.

I groan as I bend over to pick up the toy for what seems the millionth time.

I inwardly berate you when I find the cap for the marker under the table AGAIN.

How many times do I have to tell you the markers will dry out if you don’t put the caps back on?!

Sometimes I’m so tired of the monotony of it and the repetitiveness. I’m easily frustrated with you.

But then I feel bad because I know you just want my help, that you still need my help.

You’re little after all. And I really do want to let you be little.

Despite all of monotony and repetitiveness, my loves, you are still my greatest gift.

I wouldn’t change you for anything. I wouldn’t change us for anything. I wouldn’t change our family for anything.

I wouldn’t change who I am becoming for anything.

You are sunshine and happiness. You are joy and delightedness. You are vigilant in your discovery of new things. You are dependent. You are needy. You are innocent and sweet.

You are emotional and loving and love big. You give the greatest hugs.

You bring sunshine and happiness to our home and hope for the future.

You help me appreciate the little things. From the unique and ordinary rocks you find. To the ant piles that you find so endearing. Your interest and curiosity in the world invigorates me and reminds me of the little things.

You make our family who we are. I love that each day we create new memories as a family. That we experience new things and explore the world together.

You bind us together. I appreciate and love your father even more each day because of our love as a family. You unite our family and bring us together.

I love that you remind me that as a mother – that in becoming a mother, I am enough.

I have always been a perfectionist and have striven for excellence and busyness and was run by a fear of missing out.

But you remind me each day, that I am enough. Because enough is all I have to give.

I am enough mother for you to kiss your boo-boos.

I am enough cook for you to make you dinner.

I am enough housekeeper to provide you a home.

I am enough artist to inspire creativity in you.

I am enough adventure for you to excite your day.

I am enough fun for you to bring squeals of laughter.

I am enough love for you to make you feel safe and warm in our home.

A letter to my kids on mother's day

Thank you, sweeties, for helping me remember….

…That despite the contradictions in everyday life, overall, there is mostly joy. The joy of being a mother to all three of you, and I want to remember that.

…The sweet moments. I want to remember the way you learned to talk, the little things you said and did, the ordinary everyday things.

…That an ordinary day to day life will later on feel so extraordinary and far away. I will wish for this time back.

Most of all, thank you, my children for bringing me motherhood and extraordinary love.

Extraordinary love is my ultimate gift this Mother’s Day, and I want to thank you for it.

Thank you for making me mama. Thank you for helping me become mama.

I look forward to our journey together as a family in the years to come.

Motherhood is a gift. A gift of extra-ordinary love that is found in the day to day moments. But becoming a mother is both beautiful and messy. Motherhood shows up differently to everyone, but with the mindset of extra-ordinary love, we learn to forgive imperfection, to grow, and to above all love and be loved unconditionally.

I hope one day you will be able to know this same love, my sweets.

I love you to the moon and back!
