Last year, my kids took Halloween into their own hands and created the most creative costumes yet—including a DIY Halloween Robot Costume for Kids and a creepy zombie gymnast. What made it so special was how they dreamed up the ideas, sketched out the details, and then helped bring their designs to life with us.

I love that they have embraced the DIY costumes because they are creative, unique, and save money. All that is invested is a little sweat equity and some fun times with dad! (He’s the creative genius in our homee)

Let me share a few photos from last year and hopefully help you help your kids come up with their own creative ideas!

How to Create Your Own – Start with Sketches

Instead of us parents deciding what they’d wear, the kids started by sketching their own costume ideas. They even added labels and details, which made it feel like we were looking at little blueprints.

It was so fun to see how seriously they took their plans—and how proud they were to see them come alive.

How to Build the Robot Costume

For the robot, my oldest son used old boxes we had on hand. With a little creativity, he transformed them into a colorful robot body and head. We covered the boxes with bright wrapping paper from Hobby Lobby, which held up much better than the cheaper rolls we’ve tried from Dollar Tree in past years.

He added fun details like “buttons,” a colorful heart, and even shoe covers made out of smaller boxes. I’m pretty sure these were Bubbly or soda boxes!

It was budget-friendly, hands-on, and turned out better than anything we could have bought at the store.

The Creepy Zombie Gymnast

My daughter wanted something totally different—and went with a zombie gymnast. Between the tattered gym outfit, spooky face paint, and just the right creepy touches, it definitely gave me chills. It was hands-down one of the scariest costumes we’ve done at home!

Because she’s a gymnast, she also would walk backwards in a back bend towards the houses, which looked like a spooky spider and was definitely the scariest thing we’ve ever done! I’m not including a pic because it was too dark anyway lol.

We used a basic facepaint kit from Amazon to put on her make-up.

Hands-On Creativity

What I loved most was how involved the kids were this year. They weren’t just wearing costumes—they were building them.

From brainstorming to decorating, they had a hand in every step. It was such a joy to see their creativity, independence, and pride shine through.

Why We’ll Do It Again

These DIY costumes were budget-friendly, simple to make, and gave my kids a chance to express themselves in a way store-bought costumes never could. Watching them design, create, and wear their own ideas was the highlight of Halloween for me.

If you’re looking for a memorable project, try letting your kids sketch their ideas and help make them a reality. The costumes might be imperfect, but the creativity and confidence they gain are worth so much more than a trip to the costume aisle.
