What exactly are life sentences?
I first heard this phrase in a leadership class. It described the rules we make up about ourselves — often without realizing it — that then limit all future choices. These beliefs shape how you show up as a leader, as a mom, as a wife, and as a friend. They shape how you show up relationally in the world.
And most of the time, you don’t even realize they’re there.
Let me share with you one of my limiting beliefs and hopefully it will help you identify some of your own, so you can learn to recognize it. And here’s the key, no longer give it power!
Let’s go!
The Limiting Belief I Didn’t Realize I Was Carrying
When I was little, my dad was in the Navy, and I moved from place to place. I moved a lot before I was in 3rd grade, almost every year. Because of that, I learned how to make new friends. I learned how to be amiable and to get along.
But I also gained a couple of life sentences along the way.
The first one was: I don’t belong.
I always felt like an outsider. Even after years of being in a location.
I also learned how to be a chameleon, to blend in with those around me. But it caused me to lose myself. I started thinking, just go along with what others are doing, even if I disagree. No need to have strong opinions because you want to have friends.
And I lost myself along the way.
It’s taken many years of reflection to realize that I do have my own opinions. That I can state those opinions and keep them, even if I disagree with my friends. This is coming from an Air Force Academy grad, salutatorian in school, that has been successful in most aspects of life. Yet, the feeling remained.
And I realized that I’m not the only one that feels like I don’t belong. That I feel like an outsider, like I’m too much.
When I Started Being Myself, I Started Belonging
I realized that I am going to live and have the best relationships when I can be who I am. When I can be my authentic self, share my goals and dreams, be all in — nerdy, loving Harry Potter.
I can share about my latest workout. I can brag about running my fastest PT test in the Air Force since I was 21… when I was 37. I can share about my fears for my kids. My worries and stresses for my marriage.
I can just be myself.
And when I am myself, I most belong.
But it wasn’t until I identified that limiting belief — that life sentence — and realized that I was viewing the world that way, that I was able to start acting differently.
And that’s the power of letting go of limiting beliefs.
Why Letting Go of Limiting Beliefs Is So Powerful
It took someone else to point this out to me. It took reflection. It took time to sit back and wonder:
Why do I do that?
Why do I push people away?
Why do I struggle with going deep and actually sharing my feelings?
Why do I hide behind the listener role rather than the speaker role?
After diving deep and analyzing, I realized that I had this belief that I don’t belong — and it wasn’t serving me.
It was limiting how I showed up:
- To my friends
- At work
- In my ability to contribute
- In my relationships
It was something I had been carrying for a long time.
And until I realized it, I couldn’t change it.
We All Have Limiting Beliefs That Shape How We See the World
All of us have many life sentences that limit our point of view. They cause us to act in certain ways without even realizing it. They shape how we interpret situations, how we make decisions, and how we show up.
This is why letting go of limiting beliefs is so important.
Research in psychology supports this idea. Our beliefs influence our behavior and shape our reality. This is known as cognitive framing — the way we interpret events based on our internal beliefs and assumptions.
Additionally, neuroscience research shows that our brains reinforce repeated thought patterns over time, strengthening beliefs — whether they serve us or not. This is known as neuroplasticity.
This means:
- Your beliefs shape your actions
- Your actions shape your results
- Your results shape your life
And when you start letting go of limiting beliefs, you open the door to new possibilities.
How to Start Letting Go of Limiting Beliefs
If you see a struggle in your life — like why you can’t commit to a personal goal — ask yourself:
- Where has this shown up in the past?
- What other areas of my life does this show up?
- Why?
Dive deep enough.
Ask again: Why?
If you can find your life sentence, you may not completely let it go overnight. But you can recognize it.
And once you recognize it, you realize that you are looking through the lens of your limiting belief.
Once you distinguish it and name it, you can tame it.
You begin to see clearer.
You gain access to new ways of being.
You start showing up differently.
And that’s when change begins.
7 Practical Steps for Letting Go of Limiting Beliefs
- Start noticing patterns: Pay attention to recurring struggles or frustrations
- Ask where it started: Think about when you first remember feeling this way
- Identify the belief underneath: What rule have you created about yourself?
- Name the life sentence: For example: “I don’t belong” or “I’m not good enough”
- Challenge the belief: Ask: Is this always true?
- Choose a new perspective: What belief would better serve you?
- Practice noticing it in real time: When it shows up, pause and choose differently
You may still feel that belief sometimes. But once you see it, it no longer has the same power over you.
Letting Go of Limiting Beliefs Changes How You Show Up
When you begin letting go of limiting beliefs, you start showing up differently:
- More confident
- More authentic
- More willing to share
- More willing to take action
You begin to create relationships that are deeper and more meaningful. You begin to pursue goals that once felt out of reach.
Because you’re no longer operating from a narrow lens.
You’re operating from possibility.
