Stitch Fix maternity is probably the best invention for moms hands down.
Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I’ve loved how comfortable all my Stitch Fix clothes are and the fact that they were delivered to my doorstep. And the maternity clothes have been hands down my favorite.
Stitch Fix is awesome for moms because:
- You are given a personalized stylist
- Delivered to your doorstep
- Find quality pieces that are on trend
- Stitch Fix has maternity clothes
- Stitch Fix has nursing tops
- Stitch Fix saves you time (and time is money)
- You don’t have to go shopping with toddlers
- You feel dressed up which makes you happier
- You feel better about yourself which gives you confidence
But, you’ve probably heard the horror stories about women who have received Stitch Fix boxes and not been a fan of anything they received. And then they felt like the $20 styling fee was too much for what they got.
Well, I want to help moms (and women) everywhere by providing tips to get the best box from Stitch Fix the first time. I also want to talk about why Stitch Fix is worth the cost for moms in certain seasons.

Since I published this post in 2018, I’ve order 7-8 MORE boxes (it’s 2024) and loved all the clothing they sent me. They are absolute staples to my wardrobe. Many of the pieces I STILL wear after almost 8-9 years and I feel they have a place in my minimalist closet!

How to get the best Stitch Fix box for Moms (especially maternity clothes)
For women who don’t like shopping – you’re not alone
First off, I’ll say this, there are some women out there who have always loved shopping and finding the best deals on clothes. They enjoy the hunt and use shopping as a social get together or just time to be alone.
But, I have never really been one of those women. I’ve wanted to be one of those women. I’ve wanted to be good at shopping and to wear the chic, cutest, trendiest clothes, but it’s just not something that’s come naturally to me.
To add insult to injury…
I didn’t have to worry about wearing “civilian” clothes for 11 years after high school. I went to the Air Force Academy for college and then commissioned in the Air Force, serving for 7 years. For those 11 years, I wore a uniform every day to “school” and “work” and did not have to worry about a full closet of clothes to get me through the day.
I realized one day my wardrobe was made up of pieces from high school, pieces that didn’t go together, and only enough clothes to really wear on the weekends.
Enter motherhood
When I became pregnant with Little One, pretty much the only place that I was told to look for clothes were J. C. Penny, Kohl’s, and Motherhood Maternity. Being my first time pregnant, I wanted to actually TRY ON maternity clothes.
As I looked around, I was told that J. C. Penny no longer even carried maternity clothes in stock. The Kohl’s near me had an OKAY selection but it seemed small. I also discovered Target had an okay selection of maternity clothes, but again, the selection didn’t seem that riveting to me.
I went to Motherhood Maternity, which admittedly had a higher selection of clothes, but they seemed super expensive especially for something that I didn’t really LOVE.
All in all… I was NOT satisfied with the choices in maternity clothing.
Why I ordered Stitch Fix
My displeasure with maternity clothing became worse during postpartum.
During postpartum, you are half-fitting in maternity clothes that have been stretched out over the length of your pregnancy and half-fitting in some of your bigger more “relaxed fit” pre-maternity clothes. And I was oh, so tired of wearing the same thing over and over again.

For me, I did get pregnant, nursed for one year, got pregnant, nursed for one year, and then woke up one day 4 years later.
I looked at my closet and realized something:
- Everything I owned was either from high school (10 years from when I graduated)
- Completely out of style now
- Was stretched due to the various stages of pregnancy/post-pregnancy
- Completely worn down because I wore it so often.
On top of that, I had two little ones under the age of three at home, I worked full-time, my husband traveled 20 weeks out of the year, and I never really found joy in shopping.
Can you relate???
So what did that mean?
About that time in the fall of 2016, I had heard a couple of my friends tried Stitch Fix.
From several of them, I heard that they appreciated the Stitch Fix delivered to their door with cute clothes that they liked without having to spend the time searching for it! And they didn’t mind the cost because the cost outweighed the benefits.
The recommendation came from two moms that I adored and respected, so I decided to give it a try!

Yes! And they are awesome, cute, and versatile for many occasions.
4 Stitch Fixes Later
Since my first Stitch Fix, my stylist has refined the type of clothes I like, and I’ve been better at leaving a message for the stylist about specific items I’m looking for in my Stitch Fix box.
I’ve found this can really make or break a box if you’re looking for particular items.
The past three of four boxes I’ve legitimately loved EVERY SINGLE PIECE, and I didn’t hesitate to keep all the pieces to earn my 25% off discount for the whole box.
So, how much does Stitch Fix cost?
It costs $20 for the styling fee. But that fee goes straight to the items that they send you.
So if you purchase a necklace for $25. You’ll only pay $5 more.
Shipping is included and they provide a bag to ship back the items that you don’t want.
You get 25% off the whole box if you buy everything they send you.
I think in the average box I pay about $40 per piece. For the nice jackets and pants, the $40 is well worth the price, but for some of the jewelry, I would not normally spend that much.
So this is definitely the mentality that TIME = MONEY and you are saving TIME by receiving the Stitch Fix box.
With all that being said, as I mentioned at the beginning of the blog post, I think that Stitch Fix is worth your time and money in certain seasons of motherhood.
I absolutely LOVED my last box of maternity clothes in it.
The jeans were like THE most comfortable pants ever. My husband is jealous of how soft they are. Haha.
The tops were versatile and good for date night or church.
I got a super cute maxi dress that I wore for a baby shower and will wear for Easter.
Here I am looking super preggars at about 38 weeks. I don’t think it’s the most flattering picture of me, but who thinks that when they’re 38 weeks pregnant anyway? Haha.
I get so many compliments when I wear the shirt below and it’s so versatile!
Plus, this red lipstick is perfect to wear with it too 🙂 I mean, aren’t the elbow patches on this shirt the cutest?!
I also loved these two tops from Stitch Fix maternity. The one with the hearts wasn’t always my favorite print but it fit really well and was great quality. And my husband loved it every time I wore it. Excuse the photo bomber!
This red one was one of my favorites because of the super cute bow in the back!
Plus the same box came with Toms to match (oh, and I’m wearing my Stitch Fix jeans in this picture). And yes, that’s 35 week preggo belly.

I also got this plain pink t–shirt which is totally up my style. And I paired it with one of my favorite black sweaters from Stitch Fix which is SO soft and comfy. (sorry for the awkward face lol). I think I got the black sweater is Box #2.
Here I am wearing the same shirt. Would you believe I’m in labor in this picture…doing my daughter’s hair? Haha. Obviously, we weren’t to the serious part of labor yet, but Little Three was born 3 hours after this pic was taken!
One of my other favorite shirts from Stitch Fix is the flower shirt below which is supposed to fit looser…but I’m about 4 weeks postpartum in this picture so it’s fitting a little tighter.
The white pants are also Stitch Fix! Not maternity, but they are Liverpool and fit higher so it barely fit over the baby fat (which is way harder to get rid of after Baby 3 by the way)

After that I’ll recommend some things you need to do to get the most out of your Stitch Fix experience.
Note: Some people take a box or two for their stylist to narrow down items that they like. Don’t be discouraged! You will like at least one thing in the box, I promise! If you follow my “tips” below then that will help you get your first box dialed in so your stylist can send you pieces that you will LOVE.

Who are the BEST people to order a Stitch Fix:
- If you are a mom who barely has time to squeeze in the grocery shopping, and you feel overwhelmed by all you have to do, Stitch Fix might be the option for you.
- If you do not enjoy shopping or finding the trendiest pieces, but you like to have cute pieces to wear that make you feel confident, then Stitch Fix might be the option for you.
- If you have a closet full of clothes that no longer fit that you need to get rid of, then Stitch Fix might be the place to go to find some staples to build your wardrobe.
- If you have little ones that you are watching all day, then Stitch Fix might be the way to go. Because we all know how difficult it is to look for sales and cute clothing when you have littles in tow!

Tips to get the most out of your Stitch Fix experience:
- Make sure to answer all the questions about style and size as accurately as possible.
- Don’t be afraid to be a little adventurous. If you’re like me, part of the reason you like the idea of Stitch Fix is the element of surprise in buying something you wouldn’t normally buy at the store. Give your stylist some leeway when it comes to picking out items for you. You can also check out their Style Guide on their blog for ideas to ask for!
- When you give your “summary” for your Stitch Fix box, ask for 1-2 specific items that you are really looking for in the box. For example, previously I said I wanted a dress for an upcoming beach vacation and a pair of white pants that I could wear casually or a little more dressed up. I’ve also asked specifically for a maxi dress while pregnant and told my stylist I really didn’t want anything too tight for this upcoming box.
- Share your Pinterest style board. If you go to the Stitch Fix website, they will totally recommend this, and so do I. If you have a clothing or style board on Pinterest, pin some of your favorite outfits on there and share it with your stylist. This will help them narrow down pieces that really fit your personality.
- Ask for pieces that are machine washable preferably and that are easier to take care of. There are a lot of nice pieces I received from Stitch Fix that need a friendlier wash cycle. If you don’t want to deal with that hassle then make sure to mention this to your stylist.
- If you are rebuilding your wardrobe, then let your stylist knows this as well. You can mention you’re looking for more capsule pieces that will go well with lots of different outfits and different situations rather than that one piece that only goes with that one option.
- Check back in often to the website to say yay or nay on styles that you like. They have a “Tell us About Your Style” section where you can say directly if you like a shirt or pants or dress or not. This will also help your stylist pick the best clothes for you!
