There is no question that in American culture, it is a status to say, “I am busy.”
When people ask, “How are you?” — that’s one of the most common responses you hear. At work, at restaurants, in the school pickup line. And it’s often said with a tone of pride and resignation at the same time, a smile on the face, as if busyness is a badge of honor.
I want to combat that.
Being too busy — too busy for this conversation, too busy to rest, too busy to pause — is not something I want to wear proudly. When we say it that way, it implies overcommitment. And that’s not something to aspire to.
But here’s what I also want to say: sometimes life is just full. And knowing the difference between an overscheduled life and a full season?
