How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Like many people by the time the end of January runs around, you sometimes feel defeated. But as Lara Casey always says, “There’s nothing magical about January 1.” It’s okay to reengage and make actionable small steps towards your big dreams eveeennn when it’s not January.

Ask any one of your mom friends what she wishes she could change about her life, and I’m guessing it would be some variation of this:

Feel less stressed

This post is for TWO types of moms:

  • those who are looking to fine-tune their routines and habits and just need a little motivation AND
  • those moms who are starting from scratch and don’t even know where to start with managing their homes, balancing their schedules, and finding the time and energy to stay motivated to work towards their big dreams and goals

Both moms have this in common: they want to be a better mom and be more present to those around them!

I’m going to talk about my tips on how to get organized as a stay at home mom! (I’m a mom of 4 and SAHM myself!)

How to get organized as a stay at home mom

Being organized means my brain can relax and focus on those around me, helping me be a better mom. Here are some tips to do thta.

Find a planner that works for you

Sometimes this is kind of expensive, but just because one planner doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean they all won’t! Invest in finding the right planner so you can manage the chaos.

I personally love using my Passion Planner.

Or if you like things online, you might like learning more about how to use Trello to organize your life.

Create habits and schedules

Maybe you could live the spontaneous life before you had kids, but now, you need a little bit more structure to get things done. Adding in 15 minutes of cleaning before bed, or remembering to fold the laundry the minute it comes out of the washing machine, might just be helpful for you!

Once you get on a schedule, life will be easier to maintain and you’ll have less on the brain (hey! that rhymes!) You’ll have less to clean up in the last 30 minutes before guests come over (so that’s a bonus!)

  • Stop using the dishwasher and hand wash (less dishes to put away later)
  • Write down your schedule and put it on the fridge
  • Put your planner on the middle of the counter, where you’re guaranteed to see it in the morning

Recognize your limitations

The first step in overcoming mom burnout and getting organized is realizing your limitations.

If you simply don’t have time to deep clean the whole house, yet this is a cause of stress, consider hiring a part-time house cleaner.

While you may be wanting to save money by going to every grocery store with the cheapest prices, you might just have to be okay with shopping at one store in order to save time.

If you’re schedule is simply TOO busy, you really just might be busy for the wrong reasons.

Ask for help

This is an absolute must! If you’re feeling like you’re failing at everything and that you just can’t keep it all together, it’s time to ask for help. Ask your parents. Ask your friends. Ask your husband to do more.

Whatever it is ask… with humbleness, not anger, and you’ll start off the conversation on the right foot.

Battle overwhelm with contentment

One of the biggest things I’ve seen moms do that makes a big difference in getting organized is to simply adjust their mentality. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s time to start a gratitude journal!

The journal could be in a bullet journal or in Evernote, wherever it is, practice being content with your current situation. Don’t strive and try to change what you have but rather embrace your situation.

Embracing life as is will give you access to more action rather than simply throwing out excuses and complaints to your current situation. If you think and feel that you are overwhelmed with everything, your amygdala will kick-in and you’ll either freeze or fight against the current situation.

But if you’re content – you will be able to think clearer and get more done.

Learn from other moms

The statement that it seriously “takes a village” is oh so true. But because modern motherhood can be hard, and it’s difficult to make friends because we’re not living in the same small villages of our ancestors, we can at least utilize this awesome tool called the internet to learn from others.
