6 Money and Time Management Mindsets That Are Stealing…

  • April 16, 2026April 16, 2026
  • by Jessica Whitney

The Money Mindset Nobody Told You Is Also a Time Problem

There are a lot of money mindsets that limit how much money you can make in your lifetime — and how you interact with it, spend it, and invest it. But here’s what most people miss: these same mindsets are quietly running your schedule too.

This isn’t really about being consumed by money. It’s about how money affects our emotions, which comes down to how we view it. And when you start pulling back the curtain on those views, you’ll find they’re shaping how you treat your time in the exact same ways.

I want to start by releasing you from the idea that you should already know this. There’s no should in any of it — should just causes guilt. So come at this with curiosity.

Here are six money mindsets you might not even realize you inherited, what they’re doing to your finances, and how they’re stealing your time too.

6 Money and Time Management Mindsets That Are Limiting You

Money Mindset #1: “Once I Make More, I’ll Get My Money Under Control”

This is the belief that once you have more money, you’ll finally have the flexibility to save, invest, and stop living paycheck to paycheck. And for a small percentage of people — those genuinely living below the poverty line — that’s true.

But for most of us? The truth is we already have space in our budget to start using money wisely. The biblical principle I keep coming back to is this: what you can do well with little, you can do well with a lot. Research from the National Endowment for Financial Education confirms that financial habits — not income level — are the primary driver of long-term financial stability.

Start now. Because just because you have more money doesn’t mean you have more margin. Expenses tend to rise with income. Unless you have a system in place to capture a raise or a bonus before it disappears, you’ll stay stuck in the same cycle of stress.

Whatever money you have right now — that’s what you work with. Build the systems now, and when more comes, you just apply them to a bigger number.

How this applies to time: People say the same thing about their schedule all the time. Once my kids are older, I’ll start my business. Once I get out of college, I’ll work out more. They believe that somewhere in the future, they’ll have more time and they’ll finally align it with what matters. But that future never comes.

Pay yourself first — with both money and time. If something is important to you, do it in the first hour of your day. Because time gets stolen throughout the day by other people’s expectations, just like money slips out of an account with no plan.

Money Mindset #2: “Budgets Are Too Restrictive”

I have said this for years: budgets are not a restriction. They are freedom. A budget is a tool that gives every dollar a purpose. It doesn’t tell you what you can’t do — it tells you what you can do. You are in charge. You are telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.

How this applies to time: This is the same as saying, “I don’t want a schedule — I like to go with the flow.” And I get it. But here’s the thing: according to Hofstadter’s Law, “everything takes longer than you expect, even when you account for the fact that it takes longer.” So rather than fighting that, the answer is to identify the things that are most important and set aside time for them — however long they take.

When you do the small tasks first — the emails, the trainings, the quick wins — and tell yourself “I’ll tackle the big project when I have a bigger block of time,” that block never comes. But when you protect your most important priorities first, the rest of the day takes care of itself. You’ll find freedom in your schedule precisely because you were intentional with the most important parts of it.

That is EXACTLY how I experienced it. When I worked on my writing first thing in the morning, the rest of the day fell into place.

Money Mindset #3: “I Saved $10, So I Can Splurge”

Think of it like working out and then rewarding yourself by eating everything in sight. I was really efficient this morning, so I deserve to scroll for an hour. I saved $10 over here, so I get to splurge over there. The problem isn’t treating yourself — the problem is tying one to the other. Because if you’re trying to save money and then spend it the moment you do, that’s the exact opposite of your goal.

Let the reward for saving be the thing you’re saving for. That’s your splurge. You’re using money with intention, not letting it slip out.

How this applies to time: Be just as intentional with how you spend your time. The reward for protecting your mornings isn’t an hour of mindless scrolling — it’s a life where your most important work actually gets done.

Money Mindset #4: “Money Is the Root of All Evil”

As a Christian, I’ll say it plainly: money itself is just a piece of paper. The problem is never the money — it’s the heart. The verse people quote is actually “the love of money is the root of all evil.” Money is a tool. It has no intrinsic value on its own.

There are Christians throughout history who had enormous wealth and were extraordinarily generous with it, stewarding it as belonging to God rather than themselves. Having money doesn’t make you evil. An abundance of money doesn’t make you evil.

What matters is the question: are you allowing the love of money to rule your heart?

How this applies to time: There’s a cultural belief that if you have margin in your schedule, you’re lazy. That if you’re resting, you must be doing something wrong. But we are called to rest. We are called to be interruptible, to have relationships, to not be so busy running from thing to thing that we miss what God has for us.

Rest is not a reward you earn. It is part of being human. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

And rest is actually an act of trust — it’s acknowledging that God is the provider, not you. When you have an abundance of both money and time, the response is stewardship, not guilt.

Money Mindset #5: “My Parents Were Never Good with Money, So I Won’t Be Either”

I have a friend like this — brilliant, curious, someone I genuinely love learning with. But she had one deep belief: I’m just not good with money. And because of it, she never tried to learn. When she did attempt something new, her brain immediately said, I won’t understand this anyway, and she’d quit before she started. A self-fulfilling prophecy.

Finally, when she acknowledged it was there, she started learning more and made huge strides in her family’s financial goals.

You inherited your money thoughts from your family — how they talked about it, stressed about it, or didn’t talk about it at all. But you are allowed to break that cycle.

How this applies to time: The same goes for how you were raised to use your time. If hustle was the only model you saw, rest feels wrong. If no one in your family ever pursued a dream after 40, you might not believe you can either.

But you can.

You don’t have to continue what your parents did. You are allowed to build something different.

Money Mindset #6: “Everyone Else Has It, So I Deserve It Too”

This is fear of missing out in its purest form — buying something not because you need it or even want it, but because you think it’ll make you look better, belong more, feel more accepted.

You’re using money to try to get something it can’t actually give you.

How this applies to time: There’s a phrase I love: the joy of missing out. When you’ve done a time audit and you know what’s most important to you — when your calendar reflects your values — you start to feel joy when you say no.

Not guilt, not FOMO. Joy. Because you already protected time for what matters most. You don’t need to fill every moment because of peer pressure or societal expectation. Alignment is the antidote to comparison.

6 Actionable Shifts for Better Money Mindset and Time Management

  1. Start with what you have. Build your financial and time systems around your current reality — don’t wait for some unknown time in the future, begin it!
  2. Budget your time like you budget your money. Give every hour a purpose. A schedule isn’t a restriction — it’s a roadmap to what you actually want.
  3. Pay yourself first. Put money into savings before you pay anything else. Protect your most important priorities before the day gets away from you.
  4. Let the goal be the reward. Stop trading one good decision for an indulgent one. The saving is the win. The protected morning is the reward.
  5. Question what you inherited. Your money and time beliefs came from somewhere. Name them. Then decide if they still serve you.
  6. Do a time audit. Know where your hours actually go, so you can realign them with your values — and say no with confidence.

How to Create More Margin in Your Life (Even…

  • by Jessica Whitney

If you’re wondering how to create more margin in your life, you’re probably feeling stretched thin. Between kids, work, responsibilities, and everything running through your mind, it can feel like there’s no space left for you.

I get it.

As a mom of four, I’ve had seasons as a stay-at-home mom and seasons balancing multiple priorities. And one of the biggest challenges has been figuring out how to create more margin so I can pursue goals that matter to me — writing, health, personal growth, community and projects that align with my future.

Not necessarily my top priority right now.
But still important.
Still part of who I am.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly moving but never making progress on the things that matter to you — this post is for you.

Because you are allowed to be both.

You’re allowed to be a mom and a creator.
A leader and a learner.
A fitness lover and a foodie.
A caregiver and someone with dreams.

These things don’t compete. They complement each other. They make up your authentic self. This post was inspired by a dear friend of mine during a coaching call.

One of the things I love about coaching is it reminds me of what is actually important to me and what I stand for, so I want to share a few takeaways!

AI is everywhere right now—and it’s growing like crazy. Some people love it. Some like it. Most are a little freaked out by the unknowns.

I get it.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about where AI is headed. But I also know this: I’ve already used it to uplevel my life. I’ve been telling everyone I know—especially moms—about my favorite ways to use AI and the specific prompts that make it actually useful.

The secret isn’t just using AI like it’s Google. The real magic happens when you learn to prompt it well and combine it with what you already know. That’s when things click.

In this post, I’m sharing how I’ve been using ChatGPT this week in my personal life as a mom of four. Most AI content out there is business-focused—but these are game changers in our day-to-day family life.

I have to make a confession… I’m a routine-junkie. I’m that mom that sticks to bedtime and naptime routines and loves eating dinner at the same time every night.

By putting systems in place, I ensure we prioritize what’s important to our family!

And I want to provide some easy family routine examples for you too! So, grab your coffee and let’s chat.

8 Signs You’re Probably “Busy” for the Wrong Reasons

  • December 11, 2018December 11, 2024
  • by Jessica Whitney

Do you ever feel like you just can’t get everything done that you need to? And life in general just seems overwhelming? Some weeks, I stare at my bullet journal lost in thought because I don’t even know where to start on my to-do list. And on top of that, it seems like I’m failing at supporting my spouse and that I’m neglecting my friends.

Especially during the Christmas season, life gets soooo busy. Running from appointments to Christmas brunches to cookie exchanges to the post office to home again only to collapse in bed at night feeling like “I got nothing done.”

Don’t get me wrong… it’s so much fun! And the delight on my kids’ faces makes it… almost worth it. But here’s the thing…

I LOVE doing. I’m an action taker. I’m a goal setter. I’m a motivator. But I’ve been known to overdo it. To overcommit. To overburden our schedule.

I get it, time management just isn’t your thing. You’ve tried all the time management tips in the book, but you just can’t seem to keep it together. You’re always busy and you always feel overwhelmed. You’ve just accepted being late as part of your personality. In fact, it’s pretty much an inside joke between you and your friends.

You’re always the last one to the play date or to the church group or to brunch with your friends. The Kesha lyrics to “Tik Tok” are pretty much your theme song (or your excuse), “The party don’t start ’til I walk in.” Am I right? Now, what if you could change this?

The thing is, I already know you have great reasons to be late. How do I know? Because you’re like me. You’re a productive boss lady with lots of obligations, a family, a mom, and you’re an overall rockstar.
