Perfectionism Is The Enemy of Progress (And My First…

  • February 17, 2026March 6, 2026

I signed up for my first marathon when the farthest I had ever run was five miles.

I was terrified. Not just of the distance — but of failing. And because I was afraid of failing, I did everything I thought I was supposed to do. I found a friend to sign up with me. I dug through a running magazine (it was 2008) to find a training plan. I talked to everyone I knew for coaching tips and running advice.

Then, one by one, my perfect plan started falling apart.

If you’ve ever had a goal but felt like you didn’t make any progress, then perhaps this is the post for you. I share how perfectionism is the enemy of progress.

5 Rules To Be A Successful Mom

5 Rules To Be Successful as a Mom

There are the tried and true rules that I follow every day. As a mom to four kids with a husband who travels, these rules are my bread and butter of life that help me be a happy, fun, supportive, and positive mother.

There are affiliate links in this post, this means if you click a link and make a purchase, I will receive a commission at no additional cost to you.

Consistency Over All or Nothing

Something is better than nothing. Implementing small changes and improvements each day creates a compounding effect. When we choose all or nothing, unfortunately, nothing normally wins. When we choose progress over perfection, we all win.

Daily accountability

There are many forms of accountability. Whether you actually reach out to a friend, hire a life coach, or use an online checklist to hold you to your daily goals, make sure you have something in place to motivate you and guarantee your success.

I meet monthly with a group of friends to discuss our goals and dreams and what we want to improve on. Knowing that I have to report to someone about these goals makes all the difference. At these meetings, we reflect on and encourage each other through Power Sheets, an intentional and purpose focused planner.

Stop waiting for the perfect time

Many people, if they fall off the wagon on a goal or intention, they immediately quit and say they will wait until the next week. Next month. Next year.

If you don’t succeed on Monday, don’t wait an entire week to try again. That’s 6 days wasted just to have a “new beginning.” Instead, brush yourself off and begin again as the sun rises.

Make a decision

Many of us fall into routines and habits without realizing it. We become passive participants in life. Most of us need to make the decision to start showing up.

When we choose to show up, when we choose to actively make decisions about how we spend our time and money and efforts, we become more connected and aware of how we can improve our lives and find ourselves again.

Choose your top three.

I am a classic overlister. I use to do lists for everything. Whenever my husband would ask me how my day went, I would bemoan that I got “nothing” done. This “nothingness” day in and dat out discouraged me. The truth of the matter is, I actually got “a lot” done, but my list was so long and cumbersome I couldn’t see my success. All I could see were the little unchecked boxes on my never ending list.

Over time, I’ve gotten better at setting realistic goals so I feel like a success. I limit my expectations to just the top 3 most important items for the day (this is how I think moms should make an effective to do list!). If I complete those items, then I celebrate the day as a success. If I get anything else checked off “the list”, then that’s a lovely bonus.

Once I get my top three items done, I make a positive choice to relax and enjoy my rest rather than wallow in the sense of laziness that abounds itself when you put off what you know you should do.

Last Thing You Should Know about Being a Successful Mom

There is no such thing as perfection. As soon as you let that go, you will be able to enjoy motherhood so much more! Each day, if you focus on consistency, intentionality, and managing expectations, you’ll find you do have more control over your life than you ever imagined. Stop being a passive bystander in your life, and start taking action today.

The Power of Listening to Understand Not Correct

Listening is often discounted as a powerful problem-solving tool. Honestly, most of us need to learn to do it better. And I include myself when I say that!

I remember a time sitting at a coffee shop with a friend. I wanted to share some frustration from work, to vent, to be seen, to be heard. Said friend is a good listener in my opinion. Yet, I walked away unsatisfied from the conversation.

She showed interest in what I had to say, but I didn’t feel complete afterward. I was left with that same weary feeling of “still being stuck with this frustrating situation.” Now, I don’t blame her, but it put me on a mission to learn how to hold a safe space for others to be truly authentic in a conversation. To learn how to put aside my own fears and boundaries in order to be an effective listener.

As a mom, we not only need to support our friends through listening, but we will be required to carefully listen to our children, spouses, and parents as life’s challenges and struggles inevitably find us.

We need to do whatever we can to become the best listeners we possibly can.

It’s been on my heart recently to write more encouraging words to moms. That’s what I started Simplified Motherhood after all.

Yeah, the newborn tips are great. Knowing how to carry all your baby stuff through the airport or the best ways to keep your newborn cool in the summer support moms undoubtedly.

But what I really care about. What I really want to say to moms is much, much more than that.

On learning to be grateful for the hard parts…

Some gifts are easy to see…

Recently, I was sitting on the back porch watching my husband and son kick around the soccer ball. My 4 year old exuberantly chased the ball and sprinted with his best super speed, the hugest grin on his face to beat his daddy. The simple act of kicking the ball around in the backyard for a few minutes with my husband brought such joy to his whole being.

It’s this joy that I could easily miss if I wasn’t paying attention. It’s this joy that could be easily passed by if I was on my phone or computer. It’s this joy that could be missed because I only thought about the hard parts of motherhood.

It’s this joy (and gift) that I will miss most when I look back at these long days but short years!

Of course, with the joys and easily identifiable gifts of motherhood come the hard parts of parenting too. I began to wonder how to be grateful despite the hard parts.

“Motherhood is extra-ordinary love.”

Motherhood is holding my breath hoping I’m doing things right yet trusting in God that I am mom enough for these littles. It is being thankful every day that God blessed me with these beautiful babes and learning to appreciate the little moments.

Motherhood inspires me to be bolder, better, and humbles me to live life more according to God’s will.

Recently, I have been contemplating what motherhood is to me since I have a newborn on the way and two at home with me full time.

This one hits close to home since I’ve loved soaking up the little moments and letting them be little, but I’ve had my fair share of struggles the past few months being pregnant and learning to mother two toddlers.

I’ve found more and more that motherhood is messy. That I’m not perfect. That I lose my temper. But also that when I make mistakes, my toddlers still love me. They forgive easily. And I need to learn to forgive myself too.
